Music was coming from everywhere. Everyone was celebrating. The prince would finally be wedded. The two kingdoms of Lucis and Tenebrae united under the ties of sacred mystery of marriage. Prince Noctis Lucis Caelum and Lady Lunafreya Nox Fleuret would be wedded in few hours. After so many trials and betrayals they went through they would finally have the marriage. It was enough to break her heart.
The ball as always was beautiful, perfect. People of the high classes of society who were important enough where invited to celebrate the event. She was here as well since she was one of prince’s closest friends. But recently she found herself to wish the exact the opposite.
(Name) (Surname) was always at Noctis’s side at good or bad times. They knew each other since they were little and that was because the king saved her. She was coming from a wealthy family that was gifted with the power of time. (Name) had visions of the past, present or future. Enemies of her family killed her whole family one night but she was able to get away just in the nick of time and that was because her older brother sacrificed himself. Soon the King himself adopted her.
Noctis and (Name) were always close. Whoever he was going she would follow along with their three friends of course. However this time she might not be able to follow. From a very young age (Name) fell in love with the prince and as the years passed by she loved him more and more. But it was not meant to be. Noctis would marry one of her childhood friends Lady Lunafreya. And there was nothing she could do about it.
The room was full of people who were dressed in their expensive suits and gowns as they wore their masks to hide their faces. It was a masquerade ball after all. ‘How ironic. This room is already full of liars. What’s the point of hiding by wearing them?’ she thought as she stared the crowd from a corner of the room.
“You could wear something better.” A familiar voice said and she formed her lips to sad smile before she took a sip of her glass that was full of cool water. It would be wise not to drink tonight.
“Oh?” she asked him as she turned to look at him. “And what should I be wearing, my dearest Prompto?” she asked the blond boy around her age.
“Something that wouldn’t scream: ‘I don’t want this marriage to happen’.” He said with a smile. He was trying to cheer her up. It was obvious but he knew, everyone that knew about her feelings, she would never be able to cheer up after tomorrow’s event.
“Black is not bad. Besides I wear black most of the time. No one would be able to tell the difference.” she said as she turned and looked back to the crowd.
“Hey, I am not complaing. You look hot in those dresses.” He said with a grin and she giggled under her breath shaking her head.
“Your charms don’t work on me, playboy.” She sad and he chuckled. ‘I wish they did though.’ She thought as she sighed. If they did she would fall for him and not the prince.
“Too bad.” He said still grinning.
“It’s noisy.” She whispered and he chuckled.
“What did you expect, (Name)? It’s a ball. You have attended to these kinds of events more times than we can count. And you notice just now?” he asked her with a tease smile but she only sighed.
‘Yes, but none of them was to celebrate his wedding day.’ She thought as she looked on the floor. Prompto laughed nervously as he realized he only brought her more sadness the moment he was trying to cheer her up. “It’s all right.” She whispered and he looked at her confused. “I will move on, in time.” She said as she lifted her eyes from the floor and looked at him. “Besides time is one of my best qualities after all.” She said with a smile which he returned even if he knew it was a fake one.
“I see you lost no time to seek out the group’s maiden.” Another familiar voice said and both of them turned to that direction. “How do you fair?” Ignis asked and she looked at him confused.
“Why so formal?” she asked him and he sighed as he pushed the bridge of his glasses up.
“We’re in ball.” He said and she kept looking at him full in doubt. Ignis, yes was formal, but never with her, well not so much anyway. “Do you have a good time?” he asked her and she nodded.
“It’s enjoyable, I think.” She whispered but he heard her. What else could she say?
“If he comes try to sound more convincing, will you?” Gladiolus said as he joined the group as well.
“I will do my best.” She whispered as she looked on the floor.
“How about a drink (Name)?” Gladiolus asked her and she shook her head looking up at him.
“I have one, thank you.” she said as she pointed the glass at her hands.
“Ridiculous. That is not a drink.” He said and she rolled her eyes.
“Ordinary people consider water as a drink, Titan.” She said as she used the nickname she had picked for him. She knew what they were doing. They were trying to cheer her up. She appreciated actually, more than she could say.
“Hey, (Name), would you like to dance with me?” Prompto asked her with a huge smile at his face.
“Well, maybe another time. I am not in the mood right now. Forgive me Prompto.” She said with a sad smile that caused the boy to sigh as he turned and looked the other two.
“What do you intend to do?” Ignis asked her and she tensed as she realized what he was talking about. The other too almost shot him a glare. “The wedding is tomorrow. There is no escape from it.” He said.
“What do you want from me?” she asked him as she sighed not really in the mood to answer the question.
“You don’t have to answer (Name). Maybe-“ Prompto started but he was cut off shortly.
“I am asking you if you will stay for the wedding of Noct.” Ignis stated. The girl smiled a bit but it was a sad one as always. It was always a sad one since she learnt about the wedding.
“I … I …” she trailed not really knowing what to answer. Should she stay? Could she bare the sight of him marrying another? If she only had born to Luna’s place. If only she was a princess.
“We’ll be there.” Gladiolus said and she looked at him with slightly open eyes. The three males smiled at her. Her surprised look turned to happy one which took the males by surprise but in the end smiled to her as well in happiness.
“Thank you.” she said and they nodded. Prompto was the first to walk to her side and wrapped his arm around her shoulder.
“The pleasure is all ours. Let’s celebrate.” He said as he raised his hand to the air. Everyone sighed at his childish attitude. He would get drunk, chase some girls and then they would take him home while he was out from the drinks.
“Maybe you should not let yourself lose it this time.” Ignis said and Prompto shook his head.
“I’ll be fine. (Name) will take care of me as she always do.” He said with a grin and she sighed shaking her head.
“Yes, that would be me.” She said and he chuckled. ‘Why couldn’t I fall for Prompto?’ she thought still depressed. Ignis’s question still echoed in her mind. She had to choose should she stay or run away?
“And there is the man of the hour.” Ignis said and they all looked to the direction he was looking. Her eyes opened wide as her body tensed and the urge to run away grew. She would have run actually if Prompto hadn’t kept at her place with his strong arm wrapped around her shoulder. Did he do it in purpose?
“How are you feeling?” Gladiolus asked the young prince who was dressed in black as well.
“Boring and tiring.” He stated with his hand at his trousers’ pockets. He looked bored indeed. But Noctis was always bored when it came to events such as those. It was his friends that made them bearable along with her.
“That sounds like you.” Prompto said as he laughed a bit. The group only shook their heads sighing at their friend’s behavior. The prince raised his eyebrow as he noticed something.
“Do you accompany each other tonight?” he asked confused but still interested at the sight of Prompto’s arm around her shoulder. Prompto looked at (Name) who looked at him confused.
“No.” they replied as they looked back at him.
“I see.” Noctis said as he looked on the floor.
‘Ah, the prince.’ A voice that came from a young woman was heard not too far from (Name) was.
‘He is so handsome tonight.’ Another one said.
‘Too bad he is going to marry.’ The first one said and (Name) clenched her fist as she tried to remain calm. Each time she heard the word ‘marriage’ she would feel her heart been stabbed.
‘Lady Lunafreya is so lucky.’ The second said.
‘To be honest I always thought it would be that girl he always brought with him. What was her name again?’ the girl asked.
‘(Name).’ she said her name and she tensed at the sound of it. She could hear the jealously in her voice. ‘I thought it too since they are always together but the prince was smarter and saw right through her.’ She said.
‘Yeah. All knew she was after him only for his riches.’ She said and they giggled in the end. How much hate could a person bear? How she wished she could have vanished with the rest of her family’s members. Her brother would do better than her if he had survived instead of her.
“(Name).” she heard her name been called and she looked back at the group to see everyone staring at her.
“Yes?” she asked confused blinking her eyes a couple of times. Did they call her before?
“We have been calling you for a while now. You spaced out once again.” Ignis stated and she slowly nodded.
“Forgive me. I was just … thinking.” She said in a low tune.
“(Name).” he called her and her body tensed as she slowly turned and gaze those deep blue eyes of him.”Are you all right?” he asked her concerned showing to his face. No, she wasn’t all right. She was terrible but she could do nothing about it. The love of her life would marry someone else and she would have to force herself to look happy for him.
“I …” she trailed as she felt her body shaking. Prompto must have sensed it because he smiled and started walking with her to the opposite direction of the group.
“You have to excuse us. I will steal the young lady for a while. Please as you were.” He said before they walked into the crowd. “Hey, are you okay?” he asked her once they were far enough.
“S-Sure.” She answered as she shuttered. He knew that wasn’t a good sign. (Name) was a strong woman, stronger than the most, she was trained to be a soldier but at the same time she was a proper well mannered young lady, so if she was about to cry she would shutter first.
“I think you need a drink.” He said and she laughed a bit that came out as a sigh.
“It sounds great but I prefer to be sober. I don’t want to humiliate myself.” She said and he chuckled. “Besides I am the only one who can take you home after you get drunk.” She said and he laughed this time. “Thank you but I would like to get some fresh air for a while. I will join you later.” She said and he nodded as he released her.
“All right. Don’t be a stranger.” He said with a tease smile before he spotted a group of women and walked there. She smiled at the sight before she sighed and walked to the balcony.
The night sky was full of stars and the moon made it even more beautiful. She could see the city’s lights from where she was and she smiled a little. But her smile didn’t last long as she remembered to which city she was. Altissia was the capital of Accordo and it was the city the wedding would take place. She had no intention of coming here ever again. She missed her city, Lucis. It was where she was born and where she met Noctis.”It’s beautiful.” A familiar voice said from behind her.
“Yes, it is but Lucis is even better.” She said as she kept staring the city. She heard footsteps that were coming closer unit the sound stopped and sensed a presence at her side. She didn’t move however either tense. She was clam right now.
“I’m not surprised to hear you say that. You always loved our city more than the rest.” He stated and she nodded as he kept staring the scenery. There was silence after that. No one broke it and she thought that it would stay that way but she was wrong. “What’s wrong?” he asked her.
“Nothing is wrong.” She replied as she tried to hide the truth.
“I don’t believe you.” he said and she sighed as she turned and looked at him.
“Why?” she asked as she stared the young man who still looked at the city.
“For starters you have been avoiding me that past few days.” He said as he turned to look at her. His eyes found hers and she froze on the spot. “What troubles you?” he asked and that brought her back to reality.
“As I said.” she started as she looked back at the city. “I am all right.” She insisted trying to make him believed her.
“I see.” He said leaving it alone since he knew she would answer him.
“Don’t you miss Lucis?” she asked him.
“I do. After the ceremony we will return.” He said and she looked on the floor. That was right after the ceremony everything would be different. “I can’t wait to relax.” He said and she shook her head. Would she really keep living her life the way she used to? With him been with someone else? “Everything will be the way it was.” He said and she shook her head.
“No.” she whispered. He heard her answer and turned to look at her.
“(Name), I think something is indeed matter. What troubles you so?” he asked her as he looked at her.
“I won’t come tomorrow to the wedding. So don’t look for me.” She said as she stared the floor.
“What why?” he asked confused. The girl just shook her head. “(Na-“ he started but he was cut off by the sight of the first tears rolling down to her cheek.
“I can’t.” she whispered as she kept looking her feet. “I just can’t.” she said a bit louder before she lifted her eyes from the floor and looked at him. His eyes slight opened in surprise. “I can’t watch you marrying someone else.” She said loud and clear. She couldn’t hold it back any longer. She just couldn’t. She was selfish and she knew it. But she loved him. She kept sobbing unable to stop the upcoming tears.
“(Name), I-“ he started as he reached out for her but he was cut off as she stepped back slapping his hand away in the process.
“I can’t. Forgive me.” She said with tears rolling down to her cheeks as she turned around and ran inside.
“(Name)!”Noctis called her ahs he ran after her.
She kept crying as she ran through the crowd sometimes even tripping a bit since the gown was long. Thankfully the quests were occupied to satisfy themselves than pay attention around them. She wanted to get away as fast as she could. She chose to run away rather than face the pain. She had faced many trials in her life that brought her pain but this pain would be unbearable if she let it grown more. “(Name)!” she heard him calling her from the ground. She dared and looked over her shoulder to see Noctis chasing her. Why couldn’t he leave her alone? She gasped as she finally managed to get out of the crowd.
“(Name)?” a familiar voice was heard and she looked at her side to see the Lady of the day. Lunafreya stood before her dressed in a white beautiful gown as always looking like a goddess. “Something wrong?” she asked her as she noticed the tears that came out from her eyes. Lunafreya was one of her best friends. She was kind and gently. That was one of the main reason she felt terrible for not being happy for her.
“I-I have to go.” She said as she managed to choke out the words.
“But why are you crying? Maybe I can help.” She offered concerned written all over her face but she just shook her head.
“No. Just, just take care of Noctis, all right?” she asked her with a kind smile. The young woman looked at her friend confused. What happened to her? Why was she sad? But before she had time to ask the girl turned around and ran out of the room as fast as she could. Soon Noctis ran got out of the crowd looking around in wide eyes searching for her until he spotted Luna.
“Luna, have you see (Name)?” he asked her and she nodded.
“Yes. She left not too long ago. And she was … crying.” She said. The young prince looked on the floor nodding to her before he ran out of the room as well. However when he reached the palace gates it was too late. (Name) had fled the scene.
