She closed her eyes and felt the energy at her hand gathering and becoming stronger. She took a deep breath and opened her bright purple crystal eyes. She looked at the piles of books around her. She slowly raised them in the air and they started flowing around her in circle. Her purple crystal eyes started glowing bright as she read each book’s test. All the secrets and spells these books held now belonged to her and she could use it to satisfy her needs.
As she read the last book the door of her room opened. She placed the books back at the shelves of the large library and her eyes returned to their original color as the purple energy disappeared from her hands. She sighed and swept the sweat from her forehead. “I see you have been reading sorceries books.” Her mentor said and stepped into the room.
She didn’t turn to face him. Leticia Sierra was an ordinary girl who lived at Gotham city for as long as she could remember. Ok she wasn’t that ordinary while she could create large energy blasts. Since the age of five Leticia used to be ordinary. Her family was captured and used for experiments. She saw her beloved ones dying in front of her eyes. Her little sister screamed and called her to help her as her big brother tried to escape the toxics. Her parents were lucky though. They hadn’t to see all these. They were killed in the attack. The only one who survived it was her and that was because she ended up killing every one of them the day they tried to experiment on her.
That was the day she met her mentor Dr. Fate. He came to investigate the illegal activities. When he walked into the big room where the large tubes were he found her at the floor crying. She held her little sister Annabel at her arms. He walked to her shaking figure and looked down at her. She looked at him with teary eyes and he took off his helmet. He sensed her magical abilities and how strong they were and they probably the cause of that huge mess. He offered her to be his partner and student at the same time. Not wanted to be alone any more she accepted his offer.
Leticia felt someone’s hand at her shoulder and tuned her head to look at him. She saw the old Kent Nelson standing behind her with a small smile. Kent hadn’t put the helmet of Dr. Fate since that day. He was teaching her how to control her powers at his human form since he had no need of the helmet’s powers. “Are you feeling alright Leticia? You have been locked at this room for hours.” He said as he pulled his hand away and walked to the nearby chair to sit.
“I am alright. I was just reading some old texts.” She said and walked to the shelves scanning the books titles. He chuckled and she looked at him. “What?” she snapped.
“You are exactly like me when I was at your age and learnt about magic and things like that.” He said with a nostalgic smile. “And you’re only fifteen years old. How old were you when I first found you?” he said and she looked at him.
“I was six. They kept me and my siblings locked for one year until I … was found by you.” She said with a sad tune. She sighed and looked at her mentor and a smile appeared at her face.
“I see you remember don’t you.” He said and stood up from the chair.
“How could I forget? Today is the day.” she said and walked behind him as he stopped out of the room.
She flew across the city following her mentor at his human form. She looked forward as the Hall of Justice was in sight. She sighed as she and her mentor landed at the ground below them gracefully and skillfully. They were a bit far but she could see the young heroes and their mentor standing a few meters away from her. She wouldn’t admit out loud but she was nervous. She hadn’t spoken to any of them. In truth she hadn’t spoken to anyone expect Batman. She knew them though from what her mentor had told her and what the newspapers wrote. Batman’ protégé was Robin the Boy Wonder. The boy in red was Flash’s protégé whose name was Kid Flash. The boy from the ocean was Aqualad and he was Aquaman’s protégé. And the last one was Speedy Green Arrow’s protégé.
She swallowed hard when her mentor mentioned her to follow him. Yes she trusted her mentor but she was nervous about meeting a pile of boys who didn’t know. She may be trained to be a superhero but she was still a teenage girl. And teenage girls were shy in front of handsome boys. Kent walked up to them with her following from behind. Batman was the first to notice their presence. “You’re late.” He said and everyone’s yes turned to the old man. Leticia hurried and hid behind him.
“You’ll have to forgive me Batman but I’m old and slow.” He said jokingly.
“That doesn’t excuse anything.” He said and looked at him suspiciously. “Everyone was on their time.” He said and her mentor chuckled.
“Are you sure about that? Flash and his student just came.” He said and Batman sighed.
“What is he doing here?” Kid Flash whispered at Robin.
“I don’t know.” He said and Kent turned at them and smiled.
“Like you I brought my protégé.” He said and the young heroes gasped in surprise. Leticia looked at the floor and red shades appeared at her rosy cheeks. Even if she knew that she had to greet them she didn’t leave her hiding spot.
“You have a protégé?” Flash asked rather surprised.
“Indeed I have one.” He answered.
“Interesting I didn’t know you have one.” Green Arrow said and she swallowed hard knowing that the moment of truth was near.
“Does it matter? Another young hero to serve the greater good I would like to meet him. Where is he?” Aquaman said and Kent chuckled.
“It’s here but I am going to disappoint you in the sex unfortunately.” He said and gained strange looks from everyone expect Batman of course. Kent smiled and looked back at his apprentice who was hiding. “Come and greet your companions Lotus.” He said softly.
Kent stepped aside revealing a young girl dressed in purple mage clothes. She had long caramel hair tied in a low ponytail and crystal purple eyes. She was short and that made her looking adorable at the teenage boys in front of her. No one spoke for a few minutes. Leticia stood there silent until Batman approached her and placed his hand at her shoulder causing her to look at him. “Welcome Lotus.” He said and she nodded. She walked towards the young boys and stood in front of them. She placed a kind smile at her face and extended her hand at them.
“Hi there my name is Lotus.” She said and before Robin had any chance to take her hand Kid Flash came in front of him and shook it. He sent him a death glare but he ignored it.
“Name is Kid Flash which you already know. The guy behind me is Robin.” He said pointed at the teen behind him. Robin grinned at the young girl sending her shivers. “The other one is Aqualad.” He said and Aqualad gave a kind smiled which she returned. “And the serious archer is Speedy. Don’t mind him. If he ever smiles it means it’s the end of the world.” He said and Speedy scoffed. Leticia giggled and took her hand away.
“Nice to meet you all.” She said quietly. Speedy approached the young girl and scanned her.
“I don’t remember seen you before.” He said and Leticia looked at the floor.
“I don’t get out much.” She replied again at a low tune. Leticia didn’t like to attract much attention because of her past. She preferred to remain at shadows where no one could see her or hurt her.
“Strange for a superhero.” He said and she looked at his face only to meet his mask since she couldn’t see his eyes. But even with the mask she and he made an eye contact. For first time in her whole time she felt her heart beating as fast as now. She broke the eye contact and looked at her mentor.
“Shall I cast the spell now?” she said loud enough for him to hear. He nodded and she closed her eyes.
When she opened them they were glowing. She gathered a large source of magic at her hands and looked at her mentor who was smiling at her proudly. “Verto!” she shouted and purple flames surrounded her mentor. When the flames started to put off they revealed Dr. Fate. Her eyes returned to their original color and she stepped back.
“Good job Lotus. You perform transformation spell quite well.” He said and she smiled.
“I thought you wouldn’t wear the helmet ever again.” Batman said and Dr. Fate looked at him.
“Indeed. I’m not wearing it. This is an illusion Lotus create so my real ID remains a secret.” He said and Batman nodded in agreement and looked the five teenagers.
“I hope you’re ready because this is the day.” He said and everyone nodded.
The five teen walked in front of their mentors. Robin and Kid Flash sure were exciting with the whole show. Cameras were everywhere and everyone was looking at them shouting their names. Leticia however kept looking at the floor as she walked. She didn’t like that attention and even if she asked Dr. Fate not to bring her today he refused to her saying it was traditional. She shyly turned and looked Speedy. He was serious and didn’t pay attention to the cameras as did Aqualad.
They walked inside the large building and Leticia gazed around amazed and overwhelmed by the sight. “Why is everyone overwhelmed?” Kid Flashed said and she turned to look at him.
“I can see why.” Robin said and they turned to look what he was looking. All the teens gasped in surprise when they saw the huge statues of the superheroes of the Justice League.
“They are huge.” She whispered to herself. Robin chuckled when he heard her comment and she blushed.
The group stopped in front of the Grand Gates waiting for them to open. Leticia was nervous and started looking around. Someone placed his hand at her shoulder and she turned to look at him. Speedy looked down at her and gave her a nod to reassure her that everything was fine for the time being. She gave him a sweet smile and he immediately looked away.
She was about to ask him what happened but she was interrupted by the sound of the huge door. All of them looked at the gates which were opening reveling two super heroes. Man Hunter and Red Tornado. “Welcome Robin, Kid Flash, Aquald, Speedy and Lotus at Hall of Justice.” He announced and mentioned them to follow him.
The group stepped into a large room full of books which made Lotus to smile. They old heroes walked further into the room to talk in secrecy about today’s event leaving the young heroes alone. Robin and Kid Flash sat down at the chairs leaving one for Lotus. She walked to the shelves however and scanned the books titles. Nothing was picking her interest so she walked and sat down next to Robin.
The young group just stood there waiting for the old ones to say something to them. Lotus was satisfied that she reached this point. She wanted to go back at the tower and read her books like always. She heard a voice that called heroes names. Lotus looked up and saw a door opening and Batman was ready to step in but Speedy approached them.
“What this is it?” Speedy shouted. “You brought us here just to sit here at this room. You promised us a real tour.” He shouted.
“You have gained access to the most of the systems than the others.” Aquaman said and Speedy narrowed his eyes.
“Oh really what do I care which of the side of the glass I am.” He said pointing at the window upstairs.
“Speedy you need to calm down.” Green Arrow said approaching him.
“What I need is respect.” He said and turned to look the young heroes. “They tricked us like kinds worst like sidekicks. We deserve better than this.” He said and looked at them. Everyone exchanged looks with each other. “You are kidding right? You are playing there game? Today was supposed to be the day the first step to become members of the League.” He said.
“Yeah but I thought today step one was the tour.” Kid Flash said.
“Yeah but this isn’t even the real base.” He said and everyone looked at him surprised. “It’s just a sight for the tourist. They didn’t tell you that the real place is at the space where they get by using Zeta tubes to teleport.” He said and Batman looked Green Arrow with disapproving look.
“I know I know but I thought we could make an exception.” Green Arrow said but Batman sent him a glare. “Or maybe not.” He said and Aquaman walked to Speedy.
“You aren’t helping your cause here step down…” he said but he was cut off by Speedy.
“Or what? Are you going to send me at my room?” he shouted back. “And I am not your son neither his. I thought I was his partner but no anymore.” He said and took off his hat and threw it at the floor. Everyone looked at him surprised as he turned and walked out off the room. Lotus watched as he walked away not looking back. It was so strange that someone would throw an opportunity like this just to satisfy his pride.
A loud sound was heard from the large screen and everyone turned their attention at it. Superman was appeared at the screen and the old heroes walked to it. “Superman to Justice League.” He said. “There was a fire at project Cadmus.” He said.
“I had my suspicions.” Batman said and another sound was heard. Another picture was appeared and it Zatara.
“Zatara to Justice League.” He said and tried to explain the problem. Lotus didn’t pay attention to it however since she had her mind at the young hero who just left.
“Superman?” Batman said and looked at him.
“It’s a small fire. Authorities can handle it.” Superman said and disappeared from the screen.
“All the League answers to Zatara’s request. Batman out.” He said and turned to look at the young heroes. “Stay put.” He said and the four of them gasped.
“What?” Robin said.
“This is a League mission.” Flash said.
“But…” KF tried to answer but he was cut off.
“Stay put.” Batman said and walked out of the room with the rest of the super heroes.
Lotus sighed in disappointment and walked back at the chair. She heard the young boys shouting and complaining about their places in the League. If there was something that she hated was complaining. She tried to block their conversation out of her head but it didn’t work well. “I have a better question. Why we didn’t leave with Speedy?” Robin said and she turned to look at him shocked. He was right even she didn’t like the way they treated her. She was trained to be part of the League and they didn’t give her any chance at all. All these years that she was at the Tower learning spells were for nothing?
Lotus stood up and walked to the young heroes. They turned their gazes at her but she ignored them. She held her gaze at the giant screen thinking what she should do. What would happen if she did something without asking Justice League permission? Would they kick her out? But there was a question played in her mind since she heard the word. She turned and looked at them. “I know it would sound idiotic but what is project Cadmus?” she said and Robin looked at her.
“I don’t know.” He said and smirked at her. “But I can find it out.” He said and walked to the computer. He opened it and started pushing its buttons.
“Access denied.” The voice said but he chuckled.
“Want to bet.” He said and she gasped as the computers files started to run in front of her eyes.
“Wow how are you doing that?” KF said.
“The same system as the bat cave.” Robin replied
“Access granted.” It said and the files opened.
“Impressive.” She said and turned to look at him. “But when they said we have access to all the systems I don’ think they meant this.” She said pointing at the screen earning a grin from the young wonder boy.
“Project Cadmus is about genetics.” He said and turned to look the other three. “And with Batman suspicions… we should check it out.” He said.
“Doing it before them … but they said to stay put.” Aqualad said and Robin looked at him.
“About the sun blowing mission not this.” He said and he was grabbed by KF.
“Are you going because if you are going I am going.” He said and they looked Aqualad with a smile. Lotus giggled because they looked so innocent and at the same time so naughty.
“If you are laughing that means you are coming right?” KF said and looked at her. She stopped smiling and looked at the floor. Was time for her to go out there and face the world? Was she ready to work as a teammate? Could she do it? But there was only one way to find it out. She looked at them and gave them a smile.
“I will help you with anything you need.” She said and KF came and placed his arm at her shoulder causing her to blush.
“I can think some things for to help me with.” He said grinning at her and she smiled at him.
“After the mission alright?” she said and he looked shocked by her answer.
“So just like that we are team at a mission?” Aqualad said and she turned to look at him.
“We didn’t come here to play.” Robin answered to him and he smiled.
The whole team was standing in front of a large tube that held a young boy with three creatures above his head. They tried to escape and they just end up at this room. Robin was hacking there systems trying to figure out who it was. Leticia from the other side just kept staring at him. He was a testing subject like she was. She felt pity for him. Whoever he was he didn’t deserve this. They should help him escape. “It’s a Superman’s clone.” Robin said and everyone turned to look at him. “He is only sixteen weeks old.” He said and everyone gasped.
“They stole his DNA.” Aqualad said.
“No way has the big guy known it.” KF said.
“May I ask what these things are?” she said pointing at the creatures above his head.
“It’s for his education.” He replied and she looked at the young clone. Her gaze held sadness and it soften. She never in her life felt so sad about someone and now she did.
“They are making a slave out of … Superman’s son.” Kid Flash said.
“Now we contact the League.” Aqualad said.
“No signal.” Robin said.
“We are too deep literally.” Kid Flashed said. She turned her hands into a punch and closed her eyes trying to control her anger. If she lost it now everyone would get hurt but she was scared. It was the same as nine years ago. Trapped in a lap with no escape and only fear existed. Robin noticed her uneasiness and looked at her face only to see her struggling.
“Lotus? Are you feeling well?” he said. After a while he noticed her relaxing and she slowly opened her eyes turning to face him. Her eyes held a hit of sadness in them which remind him himself in some way.
“I am sorry. I should be fine. I didn’t mean to worry you.” She said with a small smile. Robin would never said it out loud but it amazed him how she could keep her smile after all these they were against up. He knew that she was lying about her condition but he didn’t want to push her.
“This is wrong.” Kid Flashed said and she turned to look at the boy.
“You know what I vote to let him free.” She said and everyone looked at her.
“It’s true we can’t leave him like this.” Robin said and everyone nodded.
“Set him free.” Aqualad said and Robin hacked the system to open the door.
The door of the tube opened and everyone gazed the young boy opening his eyes. He looked at the team for a while just staring at them. And then out of nowhere he jumped and attacked to Aqualad. Robin and Kid Flashed rushed at them hoping to help their friend. They grabbed his hands holding them away from Aqualad’s face. “Hold on!” Kid Flashed shouted to him.
“We are here to help you!” Robin shouted and Superboy threw them across the room. He tried to hit Aqualad one more time but this time he was stopped by an energetic purple rope. He looked behind and saw Lotus standing with her eyes glowing.
“Please listen to us.” She said and he tried to break her magic rope. She tried to hold it wrapped around him but he was too strong for her level abilities that ending up breaking it. She fell at her knees because of the exhaustion. She looked up and saw him coming at her. He stopped in front of her and she looked at his eyes. It was like he was alive but dead inside. “Please hear me out.” She whispered only to be sent at the nearby wall.
“Lotus!” she heard someone’s voice. She knew it was a familiar one but she couldn’t make out who it was. Her vision got blurry and she couldn’t see well. All she knew was that she let down her companions and now they were paying that price. She slowly closed her eyes before looking at their attacker one last time.
